Thanks for the response. I however am not Don Miller. You can check out his blog at http://donmilleris.com/2011/03/09/as-a-creator-are-you-being-sent/
I would encourage you to read The Call – Os Guinness found on our resources page. It addresses the idea of calling. I think your church as many, have difficulty finding a place for creative calling unless it fits within the mission of the church. The calling for the believer is to have all of life under His Lordship. That means as a musician I need to consider how my creative work communicates and shares truth from the Christian Worldview. Certainly I find ministries and many which are arts ministries who use art and creativity as a way to engage people in spiritual discussions, to join in community etc. I would say that while these are profitable they need to be careful that they don't create a sense that people who are believers can only use art for missional, evangelistic purpose. Art and creativity does have cultural impact and is credible and glorifying to God in itself. i would also recommend you reading Culture Making by Andy Crouch. He makes some of these points regarding the value of artistic work and calling apart from specific use in the preaching/teaching evangelistic work of the church.

Hi Don,

Being sent? By God or by your friendly local church? In my church in the UK we have a tradition of 'sending out' people who are recognised as having a ministry to 'mission'. Generally this has meant sending people out on a mission as a geographical placement. My church has never recognised my calling in the arts, doesn't understand that mission - if we have to call it that - is cultural as well as geographical. However, whilst this used to annoy me, I have to admit that the older I get the less that it really matters. Whilst I felt marginalised I now realise that as a writer and filmmaker the margins are where I'm supposed to be; that is where the action is!

So, I suppose my sense of being sent is one that originates from God and that the human tradition, well, I'll just have to pass on that one. My vision for mission is cultural, not sub-cultural, it is set on the hope of transformation and not for the maintenance of the institution we call church.

Peace,

Geoff
